DO YOU KNOW WHO HOMER IS

The Greeks and Romans always thought that the legendary poet Homer was the greatest author ever. However, we know hardly anything about the man or men who composed the Iliad (a long epic on the wrath of the warrior Achilles, which endangered the Greek expedition to Troy) or the Odyssey (an equally long poem on the difficult voyage home of Odysseus). At the moment, most scholars agree that these texts were dictated to a writer by a very capable bard, who used older, oral traditions, at the beginning of the eighth century BCE. We do not know to what extent later poets have made additions or changes to the two epics. 

It is interesting to compare the two poems of Homer with the standard version Babylonian Epic of Gilgameš. There's a similarity: a capable poet writes down a poem that had until then been transmitted orally. The main hero of the Iliad, Achilles, is a great warrior, but his greatest victory is not won by killing enemies, but  by triumphing over his wrath; similarly, Gilgameš triumphs over his longing for immortalty and learns to accept that he is only human. 

There's also a difference. We can not say something meaningful about the contents of the pre-Homeric poetry, and it is very difficult to say whether a Trojan War has ever taken place. The "prehistory" of the Epic of Gilgameš, on the other hand, is pretty well-known. 

Many Greek and Latin authors were consciously influenced by Homer's language, and several people tried to emulate the Homeric heroes (e.g., Agesilaus II and Alexander the Great). In Egypt, he received divine honors. 

His most important influence, however, must be sought somewhere else. Unlike contemporary sources from other cultures, Homer's poems are more or less "objective". An Egyptian text leaves no doubt that the enemy of pharaoh are evil impersonated. Homer, on the other hand, offers a balanced judgment of the Trojans and Greeks. This objectivity is not unique in the ancient world -Babylonian chronicles have no difficulty in admitting defeats of Babylonian rulers- but it is rare in ancient literature. Through the histories by Herodotus of Halicarnassus, this may be the Poet's greatest legacy to western civilization.

Historical approach is one of the most method to analyze poetry.Which is use in analysis poetry is referred to as the historical method of literary critism.

The mean is poem interpretation within the history or contemporary frame of reference ,also the histiric moment behind the poem.

This approach insist that poem’s meaning can only be understood within the historical setting.

Eventhought using this approach admit that the poem can mean something different to the readers of a later century.they stil maintain that the original meaning behind the historical moment and it can be discover only through historical analysis.

THE SETTING OF ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN NOVEL

Huckleberry Finn takes place along a stretch of the Mississipi river .This place is where the author knew well.
Includes his home town of St.Petersburg and various other famous citiesdown the river e.g:New Orleans,and St.Louis.The river and the sorrounding areas are revered ad seen as a great layout for great adventures to the story.The settings of the widow Douglass,also the Pelp house serve to portray society.Sometimes,the mood of the story is somewhat compared to the trip down the river.

WHO IS ACHILLES,THE MAIN CHARACTER IN HOMER'S ILLIAD

Achilles is the central character of Homer's Iliad. He was the son of Thetis ( sea goddess/ sea-nymph) and Peleus (King of Phthia). In fact, the story of the Trojan War began in the wedding of Peleus and Thetis.Before going off for the battle, Achilles was given armor and a pair of immortal horses that belonged to his father, Peleus. He was also armed with his teacher's spear that was crafted by Chiron from a tree on Mount Pelion. Before leaving for Troy, his mother, Thetis, had warned him about many things and also had given him significant advice on the basis of her predictions. She had specifically warned Achilles not to kill Tenes, the Trojan son of Apollo. However, Achilles totally forgot about his mother's warning and killed Tenes, thereby earning the wrath of Apollo

ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN NOVEL THEME

There is a theme of growth and rebirth in Huck throughout the story.Its an emphasis on the river as a place where the society and the story begin.Huck travels down the river (its provided tools such as raft)and the adventures begin.Its seen as separate from the surrounding areas and separate from civilization.
After each adventures Huck learns to do somethings new and become a new person.
Another theme in this story is that society is wrong.As Huck travels down the river,he learns and does many things although it would be contrary to the beliefs of society e.g helping the slave escape.He also learns the idea that the black are people too,despite the teachings of society.

THE "ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRYFINN" DICTION

The author writes the story trough Huck Finn and his diction is typical of the Southern speech of a young boy along that time and location.The diction is very informal.Its so easy and simple to understand.Humorous,it makes this book is different from other more formal ones.Much of the descriptions and imagery is humorous in this case.Twain as author also uses a lot of irony. He also pays close attention to the diction of the speech of the various people from the various locations down the river.The writing style in this story is not flowery or poetic,but simply the speech of a young boy.Here is the example of the authors writing
"Jim had plenty of corncob pipes and tobacco ;so we had a right down good sociable time,there were crawled out through the hole,and so home to bed,with hands that looked like they'd been cawed.Tom was in high spirits .He said it was the best fun he ever had in his life"
This passage is simple and easy to understand.Here ,Twain as author gives a sense of childish fun and an adventure.

THE "ADVENTURE OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN"STYLE

The author's style is simple and share his ideas in boyish mood .This story is somewhat of an irony in itself if because of this style.He gives his complex observations on society through the eyes and through the speech of a young boy out for adventure.The author also pays real attention to detail in dealings with the different location down the river ,especially in speech and dialogue.

THE "ILLIAD" GENRE

Epic Poetry, Tragedy, War Drama

On a basic level, are epic because the concept of epic comes from Homeric poems. If that sounds too circular, then just bear in mind that the Iliad  is an extremely long narrative poem, which deals with the heroic actions of mortals, gods, and demi-gods . For the Ancient Greeks, it was also important that an epic be written in the poetic meter of dactylic hexameter .

 At the same time, however, the Iliad is also a tragedy, because it focuses on the downfall of a great hero – Achilleus – as a result of his own flawed character. (In this case, the cases  are his super-excessive anger, pride, and grief.)


Because most of the Iliad set in battles in the Trojan War, it also falls into the category of War Drama. As such, it provides many important insights into the nature of war and its place in human life.

THE ILLIAD AT A GLANCE

In the tenth year of the Trojan War, tensions are running high among the Achaians (a super-ancient name for the Ancient Greeks). First, the priest Chryses comes to ask their leader, King Agamemnon, to release his daughter, whom Agamemnon was holding captive. When Agamemnon denies, the priest prays to the god Apollo to send a plague against the Achaians.

Huckleberry Finn is written in the first person with Huck narrating.Its in the past tense as a recent view.The narrator.Huck Finn is the protagonist and not simply the observer.Sometime,the author uses the book and Huck's character to portray his own idea about sociality.For example he denounces organized religion in the first chapters with the raid on Sunday school recreation.The author exposes slavery and an eviland shows blacks to have feelings just like others,especially in the scene where Jim told to Huck about his daughter .

The author also shows an aversion to royalty with the adventures with the duke and the king ,and his feeling s on the government through the experience of Pap and his run-ins with the law
